Here's an itinerary for a 7-day tour from Tangier to Marrakech via Merzouga, but keep in mind that we can completely customize it to fit your available days, preferences and budget.
You will discover Morocco's essence in 7 days starting form Tangier. From the bluest streets in Chefchaouen to Fez's historic medinas and Merzouga's Sahara desert, this trip promises an immersive encounter with Morocco's diverse culture and breathtaking landscapes.
Day 1: Tangier to Chefchaouen
The first day will start with a pick-up from your accommodation or from Tangier airport. You will meet your friendly, local guide and start the journey towards Chefchaouen, also known as Morocco's Blue Pearl.
You will explore Chefchaouen's blue-washed streets and wander through its beautiful Medina.
Day 2: Chefchaouen - the Roman ruins of Volubilis - Meknes - Fez
After breakfast, you will head towards the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, it is a recognized World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and it has many beautiful mosaics and well preserved ancient pillars and archways.
Next, you will visit one of Morocco's imperial cities, Meknes and you will end the day in Fez
Day 3: Guided tour in Fez
Fez is also an imperial city and it is the cultural and religious center of Morocco. Its medina is also listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
You will start the day by visiting the Royal Palace gate and then, you will enter Fez's well preserved Medina by its famous gate Bab Boujloud. You will pass by the Medrasa Bouanania, the Najjarine fountain, the Tenneries and finally the Quaraouin mosque and university which is the oldest in the world.
After exploring the medina, you will visit the Jewish quarter "the Mellah" following by a nice walk to an ancient fortress that offers panoramic views of the Medina and the city of Fez.
Day 4: Fez - Azrou - Midelt - Ziz Valley and Merzouga (Sahara desert)
You will travel to the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through picturesque Berber villages and towns, and enjoying breathtaking views of the stunning landscapes.
You will visit the cedar forests of Azrou, where you can observe the Barbary macaque monkeys, and stop at Midelt, a charming town known for its apple orchards.
Continuing your journey, you will pass through the Ziz Valley, a beautiful green oasis lined with palm trees and dotted with small Berber villages.
Next stop will be Merzouga, the gate to the Sahara desert.
Once in the Sahara, you will experience the thrill of a camel ride trekking through the golden sands of the desert or you can opt for a 4x4 ride through the dunes.
You will arrive at your desert camp, where you'll be welcomed with traditional Moroccan hospitality and you'll be able to see an amazing desert sunset.
Later on, you will Immerse yourself in traditional Berber dinner in the Desert Camp and relax under the starlit sky as local musicians serenade you with traditional music around the campfire.
Day 5: The Sahara Desert, Merzouga
Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the dunes and watch as the desert comes alive.
After breakfast, enjoy a 4x4 ride through the dunes to the amazing village of Khamlia, where you’ll be able to experience the unique Gnawa music played by locals.
Later on, head to visit a Nomad family and eat a tasty Berber pizza with them.
Afternoon optional activities include Sandboard or Quad ride in the dunes to watch the sunset from the middle of the desert.
Optional overnight stay include: spend the night in the Desert Camp again or in a cozy Riad/Hotel in the city of Merzouga overviewing the Sahara desert dunes.
Day 6: Merzouga - Rissani - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley
After breakfast, you will leave Merzouga and head towards Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet. Rissani is still a major trading center town in the region and has a large market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
You will then head to Todra Gorge driving through Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves. Once in Todra Gorge, you will be able to wander inside this canyon and appreciate the beauty of the landscape.
The next stop will be the "monkey fingers" in Dades Valley, a very peculiar rock formation. Dinner and overnight in the hotel in Dades Valley.
Day 7: Dades Valley - Roses Valley - Ait Ben Haddou - High Atlas Mountains - Marrakech
On the last day of the tour, you will visit Kalaat M'Gouna in the Roses Valley where a Rose Festival is held every year in May. Locals offer their rose products, from perfumes to rose water or oils.
Next stop will be Ouarzazate, where you will visit the studios in which famous movies were shot and following this visit, you will wander around Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village recoginzed as a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. This Kasbah has appeared in many movies including Gladiator, the Mummy, Game of Thrones and many more.
You will continue your way to Marrakech passing by the Tizi-N-Tickha pass and the High Atlas Mountains.
Finally, you will arrive at your accommodation or airport in Marrakech and it will be the end of your tour.
